Generic Bactrim
Indications
- Approved Uses: Urinary tract infections, acute otitis media, bronchitis, and traveler's diarrhea
- Off-Label Uses: Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and toxoplasmosis
Dosage and Administration
- Dosage Forms: Tablets (480mg)
- Recommended Dosage: 1 tablet (480mg) orally every 12 hours for 7-14 days
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity: To Sulfamethoxazole, Trimethoprim, or any of their ingredients
- Severe Renal Impairment: Contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment
Side Effects
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash
- Serious Side Effects: Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia
Interactions
- Warfarin: Concomitant use may increase the risk of bleeding
- Phenytoin: Concomitant use may increase the risk of seizures
Pregnancy and Lactation
- Pregnancy: Category C medication; use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk
- Lactation: Excreted in human milk; use with caution in breastfeeding women
